If you only participated in one day of the 23 day challenge, I want it to be today.
Today is my birthday. For the last 3 years, I have asked people to give to International Justice Mission instead of getting me anything, but this year, I want to be intentional about it.
International Justice Mission is an abolitionist organization, which means that they work around the world freeing modern day slaves and working to eliminate systemic poverty. There are over 35.9 million slaves in the world today and at the time of this video, there was between 1,400 and 1,700 people being trafficked in and out of the United States every year. IJM supports local law enforcement agencies from 17 field offices in Asia, Latin America, and Africa to identify people trapped in slavery, advocate for punishment of captors to the fullest extent of the law, create a plan to help victims thrive once they are out of bondage, and help make laws more strict in dealing with offenders. They have been doing this for almost 20 years.
Scripturally, we don’t have to look far to see what God says about setting captives free. Just look at Isaiah 1:17, Isaiah 61:1-3, Micah 6:8, Luke 19:10, and James 1 and 2. At Northside, we’re going through the book of Mark and in the beginning of the series, Pastor Jeff was quick to point out that Jesus came to heal the sick and set captives free. We should be part of that, actively pursuing justice with our purchases and with our decisions. We need to treat each other with dignity and respect because we all have the Imago Dei.
So please, consider donating to IJM today or some time this week. You don’t have to tell me that you did, you don’t have to donate a certain amount. Just donate and pray that God uses your donation in a mighty way.
